Fifteen years ago, Purdue University School of veterinary Medicine changed the name of their Center for Applied Ethology and Human-Animal Interaction to the Center for the Human-Animal Bond. You can read an interesting article about the profound effects pets have on their people and vice versa and also here.
Daily, I witness tales of friendship. Stories such as Diego, a sleek black cat, that appeared at Luanne’s door on the day of her deepest depression, exuding love and creating a reason for Luanne to chose life in this world. And there’s Emma, an exuberant adolescent yellow lab who is partnered with an older, quiet woman, Pat. Emma, the ambassador, quite literally pulled Pat from her reclusive life, out onto the streets of their small town.
In my early 30’s, having gone through a rough break-up with a boyfriend, I was sitting in the living room having one of my sobbing jags. My housemate’s rather large, long-haired, orange male tabby, Sal, approached me, climbed up, embraced my neck with his front legs and placed his head on my shoulder. This wouldn’t have been such a surprise, except he had never offered to hug me before. He really reserved his embraces for my housemate, Helen. This was such sweetness from an orange man.
These amazing beings we share our lives with are here to be of service to us, to teach us about unconditional love. But that is the subject of another blog post entirely!
Shine on,
Dr. Laurel
