Deacon needed a Thundershirt hug!
- Deacon proudly sports his Thundershirt.
Deacon plays at The Dog Club of Wilmington nearly every day while his 2-legged partner, Molly, works as a sales and marketing coordinator at a nearby company. Being a boxer-mix, he is highly energetic and loves the social interaction with all the other ‘regulars.’ One of the reasons Molly chose this particular doggie daycare was because they have video monitors throughout the facility. At any time during the day, Molly can log in and check out what antics Deacon is up to.
One day this summer, while spying on her buddy, Molly noticed he was nowhere to be found out in the general melee. As she reviewed each screen again, she realized he was nervously following around one of the employees. This was such an atypical place to see Deacon, Molly knew there was something amiss. Then, it came to her. She remembered there were thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon. She phoned the day care to suggest they put on Deacon’s Thundershirt. Within minutes, she watched the woman velcroing on the elastic jacket. Viola! Deacon was a changed dog! He turned to his caretaker and jumped up placing his paws on her chest, as if to give her a bear hug. Shortly after, he turned and pranced away, his gregarious self returned.
From then on, when any employee at The Dog Club of Wilmington noticed they had a Deacon-shadow for any length of time, they knew it was time to break out the Thundershirt.
Thundershirt wrapped around the chest of a dog applies a constant gentle pressure. This pressure on the nervous system can have a calming, soothing effect, much like the swaddling of a newborn baby. Thundershirts can be used for fear of thunder or loud noises, travel or separation anxiety, leash pulling or problem barking. As a holistic veterinarian, I highly recommend this product – a completely natural way to support the emotional needs of our animal friends.
